The Denver Broncos travel to Green Bay, Wisconsin to take on the Packers. We take a look at everything that you need to know ahead of this matchup. A rare matchup comes our way on the third Sunday of the football season. The Denver Broncos take on the Green Bay Packers in what could be a really critical game for the Broncos. Denver is currently searching for their first win of 2019 while the Packers attempt to start the year 3-0.

Aaron Rodgers vs. Joe Flacco should be an interesting matchup. Some key stats going into Sunday”s game do not favor the Denver Broncos. That is the team has not won a game in Lambeau Field in franchise history. Joe Flacco is also looking for his first win against the Packers, having gone 0-3 against the NFC North team.

The streaks have to end at some point, correct? It surely is not a promising look so far. Not trying to be negative, but the stats are not promising. But streaks are meant to be broken at some point. Broncos Country is hopeful it can happen on Sunday. But we shall see. Let us take a look at a key early season matchup in Green Bay.

The Denver Broncos (0-2) head to Lambeau to face the Green Bay Packers (2-0) desperate for a their first win of the season. After getting robbed of victory last week, Broncos Country has been feeling a bit downtrodden despite the overall feeling that talent and coaching is much improved this year.

Very few of us on staff are feeling confident this week too, with a collective score giving the Packers a 24-17 victory over the Broncos. Individually, however, the difference of opinion couldn’t be more stark.

My opinion of this game hasn’t changed since Thursday when I wrote the NFL picks post for this week. The key for Denver in this game will be a successful rushing attack and by successful I mean close to 200 yards on the ground a success in the run game. Keep Aaron Rodgers off the field and come out with a strong road win. I think they can do it too and I said as much at the end of our Something Something Broncos podcast on Friday.

This one probably won’t be close. I’ve had the Packers as a legitimate Super Bowl contender since last year’s draft and they’ve done little to move me off that prediction. If Denver can’t play keep away effectively with the rushing attack and short passing game, Rodgers is going to shred them.

Last week Green Bay’s scripted plays to open the game made them look unbeatable. The game got tight in part because they got really conservative, but it’s always a bit scary when you’re hoping the opposing coach pulls a LaFleur to keep you in it.


This will be yet another snorefest which will see two good defenses going up against two okay offenses. The Broncos are getting close to putting together a a solid game on all sides of the ball but this one is in Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers is still a talented dude. Broncos make it close, but Packers pull off a close one.

The Denver Broncos have never won a game at Lambeau Field, and unfortunately, this probably isn’t the team to do it. I tried so hard to convince myself that the Broncos could win, but there are just too many variables that point towards an 0-3 start. As I mentioned to Ian St. Clair on the MHR Radio Podcast, the offense doesn’t have the fire power, and the defense looks lost. It won’t be pretty, and it won’t be fun. Packers win 31-17.

Conventional wisdom says go with the Packers. As Adam said, the Broncos have never won in Green Bay. Heck, they’ve never won in Wisconsin. Earlier this week on the MHR Radio Podcast, I even predicted a Packers win. But after a few days, I have a feeling Denver uses what happened against the Bears as motivation, plays a complete game, and the Broncos win on Sunday. Of course, this could also be the huge tub of popcorn that I just ate while watching “Downton Abbey” the movie creating this “feeling.

The Indianapolis Colts (1-1) get to enjoy the friendly confines of Lucas Oil Stadium for the first time this season, as they play host to the Atlanta Falcons (1-1) on Sunday for a pivotal Week 3 cross-conference matchup.

The Colts spent the first two weeks of the post-Andrew Luck era on the road with mixed results against a pair of AFC playoff contenders. Week 1 ended with a heartbreaking 30-24 overtime loss to the Chargers. But thanks in large part to three touchdown passes from Luck’s replacement, Jacoby Brissett, the Colts managed to bounce back with a 19-17 upset win over division rival Tennessee in Nashville this past Sunday. Indianapolis will now look to carry that momentum into Sunday’s home opener against Atlanta.

The Falcons also came away with mixed results after spending the first two weeks of the season playing the role of underdog against a pair of NFC playoff contenders. A Week 1 road trip to Minnesota ended poorly with a lopsided 28-12 loss to the Vikings. But, courtesy of some late-game heroics from Matt Ryan and Julio Jones, the Falcons did manage to rebound with a 24-20 victory over the Eagles in their home opener last Sunday night. The Week 2 win should provide a much-needed boost of momentum, as they get set to hit the road again to play the role of underdog for the third week in a row.

It was never going to be easy for the Colts to contain Atlanta’s high-octane passing attack. But that challenge will be far greater without the services of All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard, who has been ruled out because of a concussion. Top cornerback Pierre Desir is dealing with a knee injury but he still has a shot of playing on Sunday. Desir’s absence would leave some combination of cornerbacks Kenny Moore (still nursing a broken thumb), Rock Ya-Sin (a rookie), and Quincy Wilson (poor grade of 51.1 from Pro Football Focus) with the unenviable task of contending with star wide receivers Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. That possibility does not bode well for the Indianapolis pass defense.

However, hope is not completely lost. The Colts can still lean on a formidable pass rush, led by Justin Houston and Denico Autry, to potentially make life difficult for Matt Ryan and company. Indianapolis has already racked up eight sacks and 13 quarterback hits through the first two weeks. And a beat-up Falcons offensive line appears ripe for the picking in Week 3. Consistent pressure will be critical for the Indianapolis defense on Sunday. Matt Ryan has already thrown five interceptions under duress in just two games.

Falcons running back Devonte Freeman has been the model of consistency through the first two weeks — just not in a good way. The two-time Pro Bowler finished with just 19 rushing yards against the Vikings in Week 1 and only 22 rushing yards against the Eagles. To be fair, Freeman was facing two of the best run defenses in the league in those matchups, and running lanes haven’t exactly been plentiful behind a revamped Atlanta offensive line thus far. But the Falcons will need to get a lot more from Freeman, along with backup Ito Smith, for this offense to reach its full potential moving forward.

The good news is that Week 3 could provide a solution for Atlanta’s woes in the run game. Opposing running backs have averaged 5.5 yards per carry against the generous Indianapolis run defense through two games. And the Falcons’ chances for success on the ground improve with Leonard already being ruled out as well as defensive tackle Jabaal Sheard (knee injury). It will be telling if Freeman and/or Smith cannot take advantage of what appears to be a favorable matchup.

The days of Indianapolis putting up gaudy numbers in the passing game are over. The Colts are now a run-first team that relies on a stout offensive line and running back Marlon Mack to do most of the heavy lifting. That, in part, explains why Indianapolis is currently ranked dead last in the NFL in passing yards per game (147).

The other part of that explanation is that Jacoby Brissett is not Andrew Luck, nor does he attempt to be. That said, he has proven to be a more than serviceable replacement. Despite Brissett’s lackluster yardage totals through the first two weeks, he’s thrown five touchdown passes to just one interception, he’s been nearly flawless in the red zone, and he boasts a passer rating of 107.8. For perspective, Matt Ryan’s passer rating currently sits at 82.8.


So, how do Brissett and the Colts’ passing game stack up against the Falcons? On paper, not well. The Falcons have the No. 1-ranked pass defense in the NFL right now, allowing just 167 yards per game through the air. However, that ranking is a bit misleading due to the Falcons facing just 10 pass attempts in Week 1, and Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz spending most of Week 2 matchup without his top two receivers.

Regardless, Brissett and company could still be in for a serious challenge, particularly if Mack is limited by the calf injury that caused him to miss practice earlier this week. If Mack and fellow running backs Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines are unable to gain much ground against the Falcons, that will force the Colts into the uncomfortable position of going to the air more often than they would like. That also would play right into the hands of an emerging Atlanta pass rush, which routinely overwhelmed a top-flight Eagles offensive line last week and left Carson Wentz on his back more times than I could count. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

The Colts are a very resilient football team, led by a great head coach in Frank Reich. And no matter what, they are going to put up a good fight on Sunday with home-field advantage on their side. That said, it’s hard to overlook the injuries. The Colts will be without Darius Leonard, their best defender, and top cornerback Pierre Desir and running back Marlon Mack also are dealing with injuries. No. 1 wide receiver T.Y. Hilton also isn’t expected to be at 100 percent on Sunday because of a quad issue. And with all due respect to legendary Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri, he can’t be trusted to make an extra point right now, much less kick a 50-yard game-winner. It’s simply too much for the Colts to overcome in a matchup that seems to be setting up nicely for the Falcons.

I don’t mind throwing around the cliche that Saturday’s matchup between Baltimore and Kansas City could be a preview of the AFC Championship Game should something happen to New England. These two teams played an absolute classic last year with the home team picking up the 27-24 win in overtime. Patrick Mahomes torched the Ravens to the tune of 377 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Baltimore did record three sacks. Meanwhile, Lamar Jackson had 147 passing yards and 67 rushing with two touchdowns. We could see another classic in Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

Kansas City is one of four teams who has not played at home yet this season after starting the year out in Jacksonville and Oakland. The Chiefs hold the NFL record with 20 straight games scoring 26 points or more after putting up 40 on the Jags and 28 on the Raiders. It wasn’t the flashiest win last week, but sometimes you have to win some of these lower-scoring games. Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson have replaced the injured Tyreek Hill nicely as well as the rookie Mecole Hardman. The defense has its weaknesses, but early on just has to make some stops to get the ball back to Mahomes.

The Ravens are completely different then the Chiefs as they’ve run the ball more then they’ve thrown it and pride themselves on being a ball-control offense. Jackson has run it 19 times to go along with 57 pass attempts. The southpaw has not thrown an interception yet and is making better throws in his second season. He’s got Mark Ingram and Gus Edwards supporting him in the backfield. The defense saw a ton of names leave, but the unit has stepped up so far when it needed to in wins over the Dolphins and Cardinals. Yes, the Miami game probably should be thrown out, but a win is a win. This is just an all-around solid squad.

As always, I like to start my game previews by examining the intangibles and if there are any of them in the matchup. Baltimore is making their second road trip although this atmosphere will be a lot tougher than the one they saw at Hard Rock Stadium. They are pretty healthy outside of the loss of Jimmy Smith in the secondary. Week 4 features the first of two straight division games as they host the Browns next Sunday. As mentioned above, this is Kansas City’s first home game so the Chiefs will certainly be fired up. Schedule-wise, they go to Detroit next followed by back-to-back home games against AFC South teams (Indianapolis, Houston). Kansas City is dealing with some injury issues as running back Damien Williams (knee) and left tackle (Eric Fisher) have already been ruled out for Sunday’s game. LeSean McCoy also got banged up last week but he should be able to play.

The mix of paces will be fascinating for this one. Baltimore and Kansas City are in the top three of a ton of offensive categories, but do it in different ways. The Ravens average 223.5 rushing yards per game while the Chiefs put up only 72. On the other end of the spectrum though, Kansas City leads the NFL at 405.5 passing yards per game. Baltimore is fourth but the gap between them and the Chiefs in this department is nearly 90 yards per game (318.0). The Ravens by far have the best time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 39 minutes per game. Surprisingly, the Chiefs rank ninth in this category at just under 32 minutes. The number of possessions each team has will be vital. The more Kansas City is on offense, the more likely the Chiefs are going to win because few teams will keep them down for long periods of time. It’ll be imperative for the Ravens to convert their third and sometimes fourth downs.

The Ravens have the edge on pretty much everyone at kicker because Justin Tucker is the best in the league. Tucker is 4-for-4 this season and has already connected from 51 yards away. He just doesn’t miss kicks and has come up big time and time again, especially in the final two minutes of each half. Harrison Butker is no slouch, as he enters this game an identical 4-for-4 with a long of 46. Butker boasts a field goal success rate of better than 90 percent in his career and can hit from 50 or beyond (six made from that distance) when given the opportunity. Punters Sam Koch and Dustin Colquitt are also pretty good as well. The Chiefs do have an edge in the return game with Mecole Hardman and De’Anthony Thomas both possessing game-breaking speed as the kickoff and punt return specialists. Justice Hill and Cyrus Jones handle those duties for the Ravens, but they don’t scare me as much as the other two.

This is going to be a fun game to watch as both teams get their punches in. Patrick Mahomes is going to find his weapons down the field with a vulnerable Baltimore secondary in place. The Ravens are going to be able to move the ball as well if Lamar Jackson continues to make good decisions. I believe in the road team’s defense more, but Kansas City is at home and I think the Chiefs get last licks, which will give them the narrow win.

The Oakland Raiders started off the season in impressive fashion, dominating the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 1, but the momentum was quickly stopped when the Kansas City Chiefs came to town.

The Raiders would start the game off hot, getting off to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but the second quarter proved to be disastrous for the Raiders, as the Chiefs put up 28 points. The second half would be uneventful, as neither team would score a single put.

The loss was due to blown coverage in the second quarter, miscommunications with the offense, especially on the Carr interception in the end zone, and overall not playing four quarters of football.

The Vikings have started the season off in a similar way as the Raiders, holding a 1-1 record after an impressive Week 1 performance, followed by a lackluster performance in Week 2. This game will give a big indication on just how good this Raiders team will be in 2019.

Both teams look to bounce back from humbling losses in Week 2 as the Oakland Raiders visit the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

The Raiders and the Vikings each emerged victorious in Week 1. However, Oakland was absolutely dominated in a 28-10 thrashing at the hands of their divisional rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, in Week 2. As far as the Vikings are concerned, they suffered a 21-16 loss to the Green Bay Packers— but the margin of defeat doesn’t pain the entire picture. Minnesota fell behind 21-0 before making late push.

However, that push came up short when Kirk Cousins threw an underthrown pass that was intercepted by Packers defensive back Kevin King late in the fourth quarter. Minnesota had been threatening to take the lead on first-and-goal from the 8-yard-line.

The Raiders looked like a world-class team when they defeated the Denver Broncos in Week. Derek Carr completed 84.6 percent of his passes for 259 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions in the wire-to-wire victory over the Broncos. However, he came back down to earth when he faced a competent team in the Chiefs.

Carr threw just 178 yards with one touchdown against two interceptions for a 61.1 quarterback rating. Heck, he led the Raiders to just 10 points as they averaged just 4.3 yards per pass attempt and 5.1 yards per play on the day.

Luckily for Oakland, they face an equally flawed opponent this time around in Minnesota. And while they’ll have starting left guard Richie Incognito back in the lineup after a two-game suspension, they’ll likely be missing right tackle Trent Brown (knee) and possibly even starting running back Josh Jacobs (foot). Both are listed as questionable in the Week 3 injury report.

The Vkings cruised to a Week 1 win when they defeated the Atlanta Falcons 28-12. However, that win was entirely due to the defense and Matt Ryan‘s horrific effort. Kirk Cousins literally wasn’t forced to throw the ball in that game, throwing just 10 passes for 98 yards. In other words, Minnesota didn’t want to expose their extremely-flawed quarterback.

However, Minnesota was forced to throw the ball in Week 2 when they fell behind 21-0 against the Packers. And well, while Cousins led a nice comeback, he came up short in the end with this interception in the end zone.

As the New York Jets prepared to travel to Foxborough roughly two months ago, the feeling in the locker room during the days leading up to the game resembled nothing of the past “Patriots Weeks.”

There was no talk of how this was New York’s Super Bowl—nothing of kissing rings, no mention of anything out of the ordinary. The game was, as Jets coach Todd Bowles put it then, “just another game” and had no added meaning because New York was preparing to face the Evil Empire.

But this week, the Jets aren’t singing that same tune; they’re not pretending this is “just another game.” Because, well, it’s not. If New York wants to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2010, it needs to beat the Patriots this Sunday at MetLife.

“I don’t know if I really want to place the significance of where it is in my career,” Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said, “but this is a huge one for me and I’m excited. This is why everybody in here plays the game. Playing football games like this in December and (to) have a shot at playing longer.

The Jets survived the trap game two weeks ago. Against the four-win Cowboys last Sunday, they almost fell victim to it.

Down and out through three quarters, the Jets rallied in the fourth to score 10 points, including a game-winning, 40-yard field goal by Randy Bullock with 36 seconds to play, and notice a 19-16 victory.

“We knew we were shooting ourselves in the foot,” Bowles said. “We just had to settle down, get our poise about us. We learned from our mistakes from the past, and this time, we grew as a team.

“We didn’t blow the game like we did in Buffalo; we didn’t blow the game like we did in New England. We continued what we learned from the Giants game and played a good second half.”

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick finished 26-of-39 for 299 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Bilal Powell, for the third straight week, found the end zone. The back finished with 25 rushing yards on six carries and seven receptions for 54 yards. Brandon Marshall caught four passes for 74 yards, which tied the franchise’s single-season record for receptions in a season (93). Eric Decker added six grabs for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Jets intercepted four passes. Marcus Williams, Marcus Gilchrist, Calvin Pryor and Darrelle Revis all picked off balls. Leonard Williams and Sheldon Richardson split a sack, while Calvin Pace had a complete one of his own.
The Jets were close, so close, to defeating the Patriots nine weeks ago. Deep inside Patriots territory, Fitzpatrick threw a back-shoulder pass to receiver Brandon Marshall. The ball bounced in and out of his hands, the Patriots went on to score two touchdowns, and the Jets lost the game.

Had Marshall caught that pass, the Jets would have been up three possessions with time on their side.

Since that matchup, the Jets have gotten better and grown together. The Patriots have been dealt blow after blow and have been bitten bad by the injury bug.


This game is going to be a close one. It’s going to come down to the wire and likely be a situation where Fitzpatrick and the Jets need to score to win, or the defense needs to keep Tom Brady and Co. from doing the same.

The difference, though? The Jets have everything at stake in this one. A loss, and it’s all but certain the team is out of the playoffs for a fifth straight year. A loss for New England? Well, the Pats would likely still be the AFC’s top seed.

Without Julian Edelman and likely Danny Amendola, the offense won’t be the same for the Patriots. Rob Gronkowski will still make his plays but not enough to bury the Jets.

As mentioned above, it’ll come down to the wire. But when the dust settles, New York will be on top.

The Philadelphia Eagles return home to Lincoln Financial Field a group of banged-up-birds to host the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles (1-1) are coming off of a 24-20 defeat in Atlanta against the Falcons on “Sunday Night Football,” while the Lions are feeling good about themselves after defeating the Los Angeles Chargers in a low-scoring affair last week. Detroit (1-0-1) will look to spring another upset, this time against a Philadelphia team dealing with a rash of injuries.

Philadelphia lost to Atlanta this past Sunday night and it hurt. Literally. DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery, Dallas Goedert, and Corey Clement are among the Eagles dealing with injuries suffered against the Falcons. The injury bug is so prevalent right now that head coach Doug Pederson canceled practice on Wednesday and held a walkthrough instead because so many guys were either banged up or unable to go. Besides the names already mentioned, starting defensive linemen Fletcher Cox and Derek Barnett also are dealing with their own injury issues. How the Eagles enter Sunday’s matchup from a health and depth standpoint is the top thing to watch in this game.

Wentz paid a couple of visits to the injury tent on Sunday night due to some hits he took during the game. But the good news for Philadelphia is not only was he able to finish the game, he also nearly pulled off another fourth-quarter comeback. However, a closer look at his numbers shows that Wentz has not played like his pre-injury 2017 version when he was making a strong case for MVP honors.

Through the first two games of this season, Wentz has a QB rating of 89.7 and already has taken some lumps. With a handful of his weapons dealing with injuries, it will be interesting to see how the franchise QB spreads the wealth to his cast of available playmakers. Look for a steady dose of Zach Ertz (who also took a shot to the ribs on Sunday) and Nelson Agholor, as Jackson is doubtful to play on Sunday (expected to miss more than one game with abdominal strain) and Jeffery is questionable because of a calf injury. It also would help if the Eagles could get their running game going. Philadelphia is averaging a mere 86 rushing yards per game and 3.3 yards per carry thus far.

When you think of the Detroit Lions you think of Matthew Stafford and him slinging the ball all over the field. While Stafford has been pretty good, with a QB rating of 102.0, it’s the Lions defense that you should be keeping an eye on this Sunday. This unit is coming off of a week where they stifled Philip Rivers and company, holding the Chargers to 10 points in a 13-10 victory. Los Angeles moved the ball (424 total yards, 21 first downs) but Detroit mitigated the damage on the scoreboard and came up with two big takeaways. Trey Flowers’ addition has strengthened a defensive front that also includes Damon Harrison and A’Shawn Robinson. Linebacker Devon Kennard has already registered three sacks and overall, this unit looks far better than some anticipated.

This should be a tightly contested game at Lincoln Financial Field. I expect it to be a one-possession contest and likely will be decided in the latter part of the fourth quarter. The difference here is Philadelphia’s loud crowd, coming to life late in the game to help their team preserve a lead as Matthew Stafford tries to engineer a come-from-behind victory that falls short. This will be a close contest. Closer than the experts think, with Philadelphia prevailing on a turnover on downs from Detroit.

The Buffalo Bills head into their home opener 2-0 for the first time in franchise history on Sunday when they host the Cincinnati Bengals at 1 p.m. at New Era Field.

The Bills unblemished record comes on the strength of two road wins in New Jersey over the New York Jets and New York Giants in consecutive weeks.

Despite starting out 0-2 on the season, the Bengals have the No. 2-ranked passing offense in the league led by veteran quarterback Andy Dalton. Cincinnati’s potent offense against Buffalo’s No. 6-ranked pass defense, which is allowing just 198 yards per game so far this season, is going to be fun to watch.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen is enjoying the best two-game stretch of his career to start the 2019 season. He’s thrown for over 250 yards in both games so far this season and finished with over 60 percent completion rate in both wins.

The new-look Bills offense features free agent receiver John Brown and Cole Beasley, who’ve been targeted a combined 31 times in two games. Brown and Beasley have 23 receptions for 318 yards and a touchdown on the year.

The Bills will be without leading rusher rookie Devin Singletary, who couldn’t practice this week after suffering a hamstring injury against the Giants. With Singletary sidelined, the Bills will rely on veteran starter Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon, who will get his first action on offense this season. Yeldon averaged 4.0 yards per carry and caught 55 balls for 487 yards and four touchdowns in Jacksonville last season.

Bills tight end Tyler Kroft was looking like a return to the lineup was on the horizon this week before he injured his ankle in practice on Thursday. Kroft has been ruled out but Bills coach Sean McDermott said the injury wasn’t believed to be as bad as initially feared. Rookies Dawson Knox and Tommy Sweeney will continue to get most of the work in the passing game.

On defense slot cornerback Taron Johnson will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury.The Bengals played the Seattle Seahawks tough in Week 1 but the train went off the tracks in Week 2 when San Francisco went into Cincinnati and absolutely blew the doors off of Paul Brown Stadium.

The 49ers had 571 yards of total offense and the Bengals couldn’t stop the run (allowing 259 yards) or get their own run game going (25 yards rushing). The Bengals come into this game with the worst rushing attack in the league despite featuring talented running back Joe Mixon in their backfield along with Giovani Bernard.

The passing game is a different story. Dalton is running new head coach Zak Taylor’s offense to perfection in the pass game early on. Wide receivers Tyler Boyd and John Ross are having breakout seasons with A.J. Green sidelined with an ankle injury.

On the defensive side of the ball the Bengals will test the Bills offensive line with veteran defensive line staples Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap. Cincinnati sacked Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson four times in Week 1 but couldn’t get to 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppalo last week.

The Bills are going to have significant home field advantage on Sunday as Bills Mafia hasn’t been this fired up about a team in many years. Superfan Pancho Billa will be celebrated before kickoff on Sunday, which should add an even deeper level of motivation for the players. The Bills offense should be able to move the ball and score some points and the defense can pin the ears back and go after Dalton. Bills win going away in the opener.
