He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Alex Erickson, who had six catches for 55 yards in just 37 snaps this season. Ross had 16 catches for 328 yards (20.5ypc) and three TDs this season. He has the speed and ability to become one of the best vertical threats in the league.




“(Alex Erickson) can handle it. He doesn’t have to take every snap at receiver. We got guys that we feel like can get in there,” head coach Zac Taylor said. “He’s gonna be the starter and he’s gonna play, but we feel like we can roll guys in there and give him a break.

It is not an overstatement to suggest that Cincinnati should not be favored against anyone other than Miami–not even at home. The Bengals are looking like the second-worst team in the NFL these days, at least through four games. Moreover, they are playing on a short week and were already banged up even going into the Monday night game. They are not going to be 100 percent for this one. Arizona defensive coordinator Vance Joseph thinks his pass rush should be able to exploit Cincinnati’s offensive-line problems. At Joseph’s disposal are outside linebacker Chandler Jones and nose tackle Corey Peters along with veteran Terrell Suggs, who leads the team with 3.5 sacks (Jones has three). The Bengals are 1-4 ATS in their last five at home against opponents with losing road records and 1-4 ATS in their last five on Sundays following a Monday night game.

AFC North archrivals are set to meet for the first time on Sunday when the Baltimore Ravens take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. These two teams won in each other’s stadium last year with Baltimore taking the first meeting in Week 4 26-14 before losing at home in Week 9 23-16. It’s hard to gather a lot from those matchups because the quarterback battle featured a guy now on the sidelines against a signal-caller who is now in Denver. Also, Antonio Brown accounted for two touchdowns in the contests and he’s nowhere to be found.

The Ravens (2-2) have lost two straight games after opening the season with victories over the Cardinals and Dolphins. The common thread was a lack of defense as they gave up 73 points in losses to the Chiefs and Browns. It’s expected that squads will allow a ton of points to Kansas City, but Cleveland’s success was a bit odd. Yes, the Browns have a very good offense, but a lot of the damage was done by running back Nick Chubb. Among the injuries that bear watching for Baltimore are cornerback Jimmy Smith and defensive lineman Brandon Williams.

The Steelers (1-3) finally got in the win column with a victory on Monday night against the Bengals. Pittsburgh’s defense menaced Cincinnati QB Andy Dalton (8 sacks, INT) all night and James Conner had 125 total yards and a touchdown in the 27-3 cakewalk. It’s been a roller coaster for the Steelers thus far with the season-opening blowout loss to New England in which they lost Ben Roethlisberger, followed by close losses to the 49ers and Seahawks. Cam Heyward hurt his quad on Monday and that could be important if it lingers. Also of note is the injury to tight end Vance McDonald although recently acquired Nick Vannett has already made an impact.

I always like to consider some of the extra things involved with a matchup. For the home team, it’s one less day to prepare for the Ravens and the distinct coaching disadvantage that Mike Tomlin appears to at going up against John Harbaugh. Tomlin lost a challenge on Monday and has struggled with gameday adjustments from time-to-time. On the Baltimore side, there’s the obvious “desperation” that comes with ending a two-game losing streak. The Ravens certainly don’t want things to snowball but they also have a home game against the Bengals in Week 6 so they should be able to make it out of this stretch no worse than .500. Also, Baltimore has played better on the road than at home in the early going.

For one night, everything worked for the Steelers as they exhibited the balance that teams need to succeed. Mason Rudolph was wildly efficient with just four incompletions. Granted he didn’t really stress the defense deep on many of his throws, but it still worked. Rudolph was very talented in Oklahoma State so I’m not that surprised by this success. James Conner still didn’t find a ton of rushing lanes, but using Jaylen Samuels out of the wildcat was a nice touch. Technically he completed three passes for 31 yards along with 26 rushing yards and 57 receiving.


On the other side, you’ve got a Ravens team that saw Lamar Jackson throw two interceptions and take four sacks as well in the 40-15 loss to the Browns. Baltimore allowed nearly 200 yards on the ground alone, with most of those coming from the aforementioned Chubb. Cleveland actually held the ball longer than the Ravens, which is never a recipe for success. Stopping the run hadn’t been an issue for this defense previously. If that trend continues, then Baltimore is really in trouble until the secondary gets healthy. The pass rush couldn’t get home on Baker Mayfield.

This matchup represents somewhat a clash of styles. The Steelers would probably much prefer a lower-scoring game seeing as though their offensive weapons aren’t as good without AB and Le’Veon Bell. They want to play a game with fewer possessions because Rudolph’s arm doesn’t allow as much for big plays. Ironically, in this matchup, Baltimore probably wants to go a little up-tempo with Jackson to try and force Pittsburgh to open things up on offense. The Ravens are a ball-control team, but I think they can take advantage of the Steelers through the air. I’m sure Mark Ingram and Gus Edwards will be used plenty, but I bet we see plenty of passes too.

Home-field advantage didn’t matter last year with the visitors winning each game. I think that changes this year with the Steelers taking care of business on Sunday. Games like this past Monday help propel a team to play better. I think Mason Rudolph takes advantage of a vulnerable Ravens secondary and I think the Steelers force Lamar Jackson into another turnover or two. The race in the AFC North gets a lot more interesting after a Steelers win.

This was preceded by a disappointing 20-7 road loss to Jacksonville.

If recent history is any indicator, don’t be surprised to see this game played in the teens with the slimmest of margins. The 2018 meeting was won by Buffalo, 13-12. The 2015 meeting was a 14-13 final, also won by the Bills. But at least the Titans still have the Music City Miracle, right?

Tennessee is coming off of a pristine offensive performance last week against Atlanta. Marcus Mariota had three touchdowns passes and still has yet to throw an interception. After giving up 17 sacks in the first three games, the Titans’ much-maligned offensive line yielded zero to the Falcons. Running back Derrick Henry hit the century mark on the ground and wide receivers Corey Davis and A.J. Brown each found the end zone (Brown twice) and posted 90-plus receiving yards.

The game plan was stout and the execution almost flawless. Now it’s a matter of how the team and first-year offensive coordinator Arthur Smith follows up that performance against a stingy Bills defense that made Tom Brady look mortal last week. Points will likely be at a premium, so execution, pass protection, and ball security will be critical. The Titans will get a boost in the return of Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan, who is eligible after serving his four-game suspension.

There’s plenty of uncertainty at the most important position on the field for the Bills heading into Sunday’s game. Second-year signal-caller Josh Allen was knocked out of Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter and entered concussion protocol. He is progressing but it’s no guarantee he will be cleared in time to play. If he is unable to go, the Bills, will turn to veteran backup Matt Barkley. If Barkley does in fact make the start expect head coach Sean McDermott and the Bills to lean on aging, yet still productive veteran running back Frank Gore with rookie Devin Singletary still being bothered by a lingering hamstring injury. If Gore can find success on the ground that will open up things in the passing game for wide receivers John Brown, Cole Beasley, and Zay Jones, as well as rookie tight end Dawson Knox.

If you like stout defenses this is your kind of Sunday. The Titans are fourth in the NFL in points per game allowed at 15.5 and the Bills are right behind 15.8. The Titans have had success getting after the passer (13, tied for sixth in league), an issue that plagued their defense in 2018. The Bills are second in total defense (280.8 yards per game) and are coming off of a week where Tom Brady struggled (18-for-39, 150 yards, INT) and the Patriots offense totaled just 224 yards and 11 first downs. Expect the struggle to be real for both offenses Sunday at Nissan Stadium.

The Titans have lost to the Bills twice in the last four years by a single point in each game. The Titans, however, are 16-6 in their last 22 home games and should certainly be looking for revenge after last year’s 13-12 clunker in upstate New York. This game won’t be pretty. Don’t expect huge stats from any players you may have on your fantasy team or the scoreboard to get a workout. Won’t happen. These two teams are mirror images of each other, with Tennessee being a slightly more talented version. Another nail-biter awaits, but this time the Titans prevail in another grind-it-out affair.

When it comes to the offense the Redskins have managed to get a total of 16.5 points a game on the year. The team has thrown the ball for 269.3 yards a game, but have only rushed the ball for 49.8 yards a game on the season. Defensively the Redskins have started to struggle to with 29.5 points a game allowed this year. The Redskins have allowed 259.5 yards a game in the air, but have ended up giving up 147.5 yards a game on the ground.

The Redskins are going to lose this game, that is not the question. The question comes from the fact of how many points are the Redskins are going to lose by. With the Patriots the offense will run over the Redskins defense and how horrible the Redskins offense was against the Giants is just a preview of what happens in this game as the Patriots defense shuts down the Redskins offense. The third-year standout out of Stanford has run for 411 yards on 4.8 yards per carry to go along with four touchdowns. He also leads the team in receptions with 25 for 218 yards.

“It is a very unique challenge,” Jacksonville defensive coordinator Todd Wash said of McCaffrey. “We were talking earlier in the week and if he’s not the best, he’s one of the best players we have played against all year. He is somebody that obviously we have to know where he’s at at all times on the field and try to do some different things to try to take care of him. But he is playing like an MVP candidate right now.”
Defensively, Carolina is anchored by linebacker Luke Kuechly (44 tackles) and defensive end Mario Addison (5.5 sacks). They will have to play without veteran defensive tackle Kawann Short, who had season-ending shoulder surgery.

McCaffrey is not getting much help on offense, to the extent that the Panthers are merely decent on that side of the ball despite boasting one of the most explosive players in football. They are 18th in total offense (18th in passing, 17th in rushing). Meanwhile, Jacksonville is surrendering less than 100 rushing yards per contest–99.5 to be exact. The Jaguars are good enough on defense to take away McCaffrey at least in part and make Allen beat them. That is not yet something Newton’s backup has proven to be able to do, at least at this point. For Carolina’s defense, linebacker Bruce Irvin (hamstring) and cornerback Donte Jackson (groin) are questionable.

Los Angeles is also looking to rebound this week after taking its first loss of this season last week, 45-35 at New Orleans. The Rams matched the Saints to a 14-14 tie in the second quarter, fell down 35-14 then rallied to forge a 35-35 tie in the fourth. But Los Angeles gave up the final 10 points of the game to fall from undefeated status.

On the day Los Angeles racked up 483 yards of total offense. But the Rams also came up just short on a fake field goal, missed a field goal and threw an interception in their own territory, all of which combined to basically create a minus-27 point differential.

Los Angeles has now out-gained seven of its last eight opponents, and hit the 30-point mark seven out of nine games this season. At 8-1 overall Los Angeles leads New Orleans by a half-game in the battle for the best record in the NFC.

Even though the Seattle Seahawks have experienced a longer run of recent success than the Rams, it’s Los Angeles that owns the edge in the recent rivalry, winning five of the last eight meetings straight up and going 5-3 against the spread.

Thursday’s victory was the third game in 12 days for Los Angeles, but they’ve now had a few extra days off to get ready for this one.

The Seahawks own a two-game winning streak after beating the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale last week, 20-17.

Seattle drew first blood on a 20-yard touchdown run by Mike Davis, trailed at the half 10-7 but scored the first 10 points out of the locker to retake the lead. In the end the Seahawks won it with a defensive hold and a Sebastian Janikowski 52-yard field goal at the buzzer.

On the day, Seattle outgained Arizona 331-263, outrushed the Cardinals 171-92 and held a 32/28 edge in time of possession.

Two weeks ago, the Seahawks defeated Dallas 24-13, and their two losses this season came by three points at Denver and seven at Chicago. So Seattle has been in every game.

The Rams continue to stake their claim as the best team in football after beating Minnesota last week 38-31.

Los Angeles spotted the Vikings the first seven points of the game and trailed 17-14 well into the second quarter. But the Rams scored twice just before the half and led by two scores most of the rest of the way.

However, the Rams gave up a field goal with three minutes to go and ended up pushing the spread as a seven-point favorite.

On the night, Los Angeles piled up 556 yards of total offense, as Jared Goff hit on 26 of 33 throws for 465 yards and five touchdowns, without an interception. So the Rams lead the league in total offense, averaging 125 yards per game on the ground and 343 through the air. They’ve also scored at least 33 points every game this season.

Thursday’s victory was the third game in 12 days for Los Angeles, but they’ve now had a few extra days off to get ready for this one.

The Seahawks own a two-game winning streak after beating the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale last week, 20-17.

Two weeks ago, the Seahawks defeated Dallas 24-13, and their two losses this season came by three points at Denver and seven at Chicago. So Seattle has been in every game.

The Rams are rolling, and playing on the road means the spread is a bit more manageable. Meanwhile, the Seahawks just lost veteran defensive back Earl Thomas to a bad leg injury.
